Keto is short for ketosis, or ketogenic, or ketones. It is a way of eating or fasting that promotes ketones in the human body.
Ketones, also called ketone bodies, are molecules in the body that provide fuel for our cells, and also do much more to promote health. For more on ketones, see here and here and here. We encourage you to seek information from recent scientific sources about ketones, not popular literature or the mass media, which often draws from old and dated thoughts on the subject.
The best way to determine if you are a good candidate is to consult with a medical doctor who is familiar with the ketogenic way of eating.
There are specific and rare health conditions that will cause problems for a low percentage of the population, again, consult a doctor if you have any concerns. For the vast majority of the population, a properly formulated keto diet is perfectly healthy.
One condition that is often confused with ketosis is ketoacidosis. A nutritional ketosis and Ketoacidosis are different. These are two different metabolic states. Ketoacidosis happens in uncontrolled diabetes, and extremely rarely at any other time. These words sound the same, and so are often confused.
